1. Bhubaneswar, July 1'÷ The Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) in India is much higher when compared to its neighbours Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, a senior official in the Department of Women and Child Development said here today.
2. The IMR in India was 63 per 1000 live births in 2002 compared to 57 in Bangladesh, 17 in Sri Lanka and only 7 in the USA, Chaman Kumar, joint secretary in the department told a two–day regional consultation on nutrition here.

India figured at the top of the chart on low birth weight babies in South East Asia with 30 per cent, while Sri Lanka accounted for 22 per cent followed by Nepal (21), Myanmar (15), Indonesia and Thailand (' each). During the 10th plan, the Centre had set a goal to bring down the IMR from 63 to 45 per 1000 births, under–weight children (below three years) from 47 to 40 per cent and reduce prevalence of severe under nutrition in children in the 0–6 years age group by 50 per cent, Kumar said.
